Year 4 primary maths covers five broad areas: large whole numbers and operations on them, factors and multiples (LCM and HCF), fractions, measurement and plane shapes, and simple data handling.

Year 4 is a turning point. Up to Year 3, most problems can still be solved by counting objects one by one. From Year 4 onward, children must work with ideas they cannot hold in their hands - multiples, equivalent fractions, area. This is why many parents suddenly feel their child is struggling after years of doing fine.

Factors, Multiples, LCM and HCF

This is the hardest chapter in Year 4, and the cause is not the arithmetic but the vocabulary. Factor, multiple, LCM, and HCF sound alike, so children often master the method yet still answer wrongly because they cannot tell which one the question wants.

The easiest distinction for a child to hold on to:

A factor divides exactly. The factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12. There is always a finite number of them, and none is larger than the number itself.
A multiple is the result of multiplying. The multiples of 12 are 12, 24, 36, and so on without end. Each is greater than or equal to the number.

The practical rule: factors go down, multiples go up. A child holding that one sentence rarely mixes them up again.

From there, HCF is the highest common factor and LCM is the lowest common multiple. Note that highest attaches to factors and lowest to multiples - an arrangement that feels back to front and genuinely does confuse.

How to recognise word problems. HCF questions are usually about dividing things into equal groups, as many as possible - splitting 24 pencils and 36 books into identical packs. LCM questions are usually about two repeating events that eventually coincide - two lamps flashing every 4 and every 6 seconds.

This chapter is also where children first meet prime numbers, used for factorisation. Fluency with the times tables is a prerequisite that cannot be skipped - a child still counting multiplication on their fingers will run out of energy before reaching the part actually being tested.

Fractions in Year 4

Year 4 is when fractions stop being pictures and start being numbers. In earlier years a child sees a fraction as a slice of pizza. Now they must accept that one half and two quarters are exactly the same number, even though the pictures differ.

Year 4 covers equivalent fractions, comparing two fractions, ordering them, and adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators.

The classic mistake is adding the denominators. A child writes one half plus one third equals two fifths, because they treat numerator and denominator as two separate numbers. This is not carelessness; it is a sign they do not yet see a fraction as a single whole number.

The fastest fix is not repeating the rule but using real objects. Half a loaf plus a third of a loaf is clearly more than half, whereas two fifths is clearly less than half. A child who spots the contradiction themselves remembers it far longer than one who is told the method is wrong.

Measurement and Angles

The measurement chapter requires memorising the ladder of units: kilometre, hectometre, decametre, metre, decimetre, centimetre, millimetre - one step up means divide by ten, one step down means multiply by ten. The same pattern applies to units of mass.

The difficulty is not the ladder but the direction. Children often know the order of units yet lose track of when to multiply and when to divide. A helpful anchor: a smaller unit always produces a larger number. One metre is 100 centimetres - the unit shrinks, the number grows.

This chapter is also where children first use a protractor to measure angles and meet acute, right, and obtuse angles. It is a manual skill as well as a concept, and it is often the part children enjoy most, because there is a tool to hold.

Plane Shapes: Perimeter and Area

Telling perimeter from area is one of the most persistent mix-ups across the whole of primary school. Perimeter is the length of the fence around a garden; area is how much grass is inside it. One is measured in units of length, the other in square units.

In Year 4 children calculate perimeter and area for three shapes: the rectangle, the square, and the triangle. The formulas are short, but children need practice reading a question to decide which one is wanted.

The triangle area formula is often memorised without being understood. The reason behind it is simple: two identical triangles, put together, form a rectangle. That is why a triangle's area is half the base times the height. A child who has cut paper and arranged it themselves rarely forgets this.

Data Handling

The lightest chapter in Year 4, and often a rescue for the overall grade. Children learn to collect simple data, present it in tables, bar charts, and pictograms, then read information back from someone else's chart.

Three points, almost always in this order.
