Fractions: Meaning, Types, and How to Calculate for Kids

A fraction is a number that expresses part of a whole, written as a numerator over a denominator, for example 1/2 or 3/4. Fractions are first taught in grades 3-4 of primary school and are used through secondary school. There are three main types a child should know: common fractions, mixed fractions, and decimal fractions. This guide is for parents and primary-school children who want to understand the meaning, types, and calculation of fractions from scratch.
We meet fractions every day without noticing: half a glass of milk, a quarter of a pizza, three quarters of an hour. To a child, fractions often feel scary, yet the idea is simple: dividing a whole into equal parts.
What Is a Fraction: A Simple Definition
A fraction is a way of writing part of a single whole that has been shared out equally. If one apple is split into two equal parts, each part is worth 1/2 (one half). If a slice of cake is divided into four, each piece is worth 1/4.

The word "fraction" comes from breaking or dividing. So every time you share something fairly, you are really working with fractions. One key condition: the parts must be equal in size. If a cake is cut into uneven pieces, it is not yet a fraction. This is the first misconception worth clearing up early with a child.
