What is the Algonova Diagnostic Method?

The Algonova Diagnostic Method is the same sequence for every student, in four steps: a 45-minute online diagnostic, a personal learning plan built from the diagnostic results, live 90-minute classes with the same certified teacher every week, and one of three class formats — private 1 student, a mini-group of 2–4, or a group of up to 10.

Inside the classroom the order is always the same: the concept is shown with objects and pictures first, the child explains it back in their own words, and only then comes practice.

The method is used across all three Algonova maths tracks: Math Starters (ages 6–7), Math Explorers (ages 8–12) and Math Masters (ages 13–17).

How does this relate to the CPA approach?

Accepted Answer

CPA (Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract) is a widely known approach to teaching mathematics: children work with real objects first, then pictures, then symbols and formulas.

CPA is not ours and was not created by Algonova. We name it because the sequence we use in class runs in the same direction: blocks for place value, pizza slices for fractions, then drawings, then numbers and formulas.

Algonova claims no certification or affiliation with any organisation that develops or teaches CPA.

Does the method fit Kurikulum Merdeka?

Each child's learning plan is aligned with the topics they are currently studying at school, including schools running Kurikulum Merdeka. After the diagnostic, the teacher builds a topic order that closes the child's gaps while still following their school material.

Kurikulum Merdeka emphasises conceptual understanding and application rather than memorisation. Our sequence runs in the same direction: visual concept first, the child explains it back, practice afterwards.

Algonova is supplementary tutoring outside school — not a replacement for school and not part of any government programme.

How is this different from sempoa?

Accepted Answer

Sempoa trains mental calculation speed through an abacus and graded repetitive drills. Its focus is arithmetic speed and accuracy.

The Algonova Diagnostic Method starts somewhere else: from a 45-minute diagnostic that finds the child's understanding gaps, then builds the concept visually, and only then drills it. What gets trained most is reasoning, word problems and real-world application — not calculation speed.

The two can coexist. If your goal is school maths grades and understanding of class material, our sequence sits closer to that goal.

How is this different from Kumon?

Accepted Answer

Kumon works through graded worksheets a child completes independently every day, with a placement test at the start and a supervisor marking the results. Its strength is fluency and daily discipline.

At Algonova the child always learns with a live teacher during the 90-minute lesson — the teacher explains the concept, guides the practice, and asks the child to explain it back. The starting point is the 45-minute diagnostic, and the learning plan is aligned with the child's school material.

In short: Kumon emphasises graded independent practice; Algonova emphasises understanding the concept with a teacher before practising it.

How is this different from Brain Academy?

Brain Academy is tutoring that follows the school grade level and school exam material, with a class tutor.

The Algonova Diagnostic Method does not start from the child's grade level but from the 45-minute diagnostic result — because a kelas 5 child may well have a gap in a kelas 3 topic. The plan is built from that gap upwards until the child is level with or ahead of their class material.

Class size also differs: we offer three fixed formats — private 1 student, a mini-group of 2–4, or a group of up to 10.

How long is the diagnostic, and is it free?

The diagnostic lasts 45 minutes and is free, with no obligation to enrol and no credit card.

Three things are often confused and have different durations: the diagnostic is 45 minutes, the introductory master class is 60 minutes, and a regular lesson is 90 minutes.

After the diagnostic, parents receive a picture of which topics the child has mastered, where the gaps are, and a recommendation of the track and class format that fit.
