Year 3 Primary Maths Topics: A Complete Chapter Guide

Year 3 primary maths covers six broad areas: numbers to 10,000, long multiplication and division, simple fractions, units of time and mass, perimeter and area of plane shapes, and simple data presentation.

Year 3 begins Phase B in the Merdeka curriculum, together with Year 4. The most noticeable change: speed starts to matter. In Years 1 and 2 a child may calculate slowly as long as the answer is right. From Year 3 the problems become multi-step, and a child still slow on basic multiplication will run out of time before reaching the part actually being tested.

One chapter stands clearly above the rest: long multiplication and division. It is the chapter that decides whether Year 4 will feel reasonable or heavy.

Long Multiplication and Division

This is the decisive chapter of Year 3, and its prerequisite is absolute: the times tables from 1 to 10 must already be automatic.

Long multiplication is not a new skill but a combination of three already-learned ones: basic multiplication, place value, and addition with carrying. If any of them is shaky, the result looks like a child who cannot do long multiplication - when the problem is actually in a component.

Checking is simple. Ask what 7 times 8 is, at random, outside a lesson. If the child needs more than two seconds or starts calculating, the root is in the times tables, not in the long-multiplication technique. Adding more long-multiplication practice in that state simply exhausts the child without improvement.

Long division is harder still, because it demands four repeating steps: divide, multiply, subtract, bring down. The child must hold that sequence in mind while performing separate calculations. This is a genuine working-memory load, and it is normal for it to take longer than any chapter before it.

Remainders are also new in Year 3, and often confuse because the answer has two parts. The explanation that makes most sense to a child is a real sharing: thirteen sweets among four children gives each three, with one left on the plate. The remainder is not a mistake but part of the answer.

Numbers to 10,000

Place value gains another level, the thousands. The classic error is the same as in Year 2, only larger: a child writes three thousand and twenty-five as 300025, because they write what they hear rather than assembling place values.

Rounding is also introduced here - to the nearest ten, hundred, and thousand. Its usefulness becomes apparent later, when a child needs to estimate whether an answer is plausible.

Fractions, Units, and Perimeter and Area

Fractions in Year 3 develop from Year 2: children begin comparing fractions and adding those with like denominators. The hardest idea to accept is that the larger the denominator, the smaller the value. One eighth is less than one quarter, even though 8 is bigger than 4.

This contradicts every previous experience a child has had, where a bigger number always meant more. The only approach that reliably works is cutting real objects: one loaf divided into four versus into eight. Verbal explanation is rarely enough. The basics are in fractions.

Units of time require working with numbers that are not base ten - 60 seconds to a minute, 60 minutes to an hour. After two years of decimal thinking this feels strange and is a frequent source of error.

Perimeter and area are introduced the right way round in Year 3: not through formulas but through counting. Perimeter is found by adding the lengths of all sides, area by counting the unit squares inside. Formulas arrive in Year 4. A child who has counted squares one by one will understand the area formula for a rectangle as a shortcut rather than something to memorise.

Where Children Get Stuck Most Often

Times tables that are not yet automatic. This is the number one cause, and it disguises itself as difficulty with long multiplication.
The sequence of long-division steps being too much to hold in mind.
Assuming a bigger denominator means a bigger value in fractions.
Base-60 time units after two years of decimal thinking.

How Parents Can Help at Home

Test the times tables at random, not in order. Reciting seven eights are fifty-six as part of a memorised sequence is not the same as knowing it. Ask out of context - in the car, in a queue.
Write the four division steps on paper and let it stay taped to the desk until the child no longer needs it. Reducing memory load is not cheating.
Cut real objects for fractions. It is the only approach that consistently works for denominators.
Count squares for area before introducing any formula.
