Year 2 Primary Maths Topics: A Complete Chapter Guide

Year 2 primary maths covers six broad areas: numbers to 999, column addition and subtraction, an introduction to multiplication and division, standard units of length mass and time, simple fractions, and the parts of plane shapes.

Year 2 still sits in Phase A alongside Year 1, but the content jumps considerably. This is where a child first meets two things that will stay with them throughout primary school: carrying and borrowing in column arithmetic, and the idea of multiplication.

Year 2 Maths Topics, Chapter by Chapter

ChapterWhat is coveredDifficulty
Numbers to 999Place value in hundreds, comparing and ordering numbersModerate
Column addition and subtractionCarrying and borrowingHigh
Multiplication and divisionAs repeated addition and subtraction; tables 1 to 10High
Standard unitsLength in cm and m, mass in grams and kg, time in hours and minutesModerate
Simple fractionsHalves, thirds, and quarters as parts of a whole objectModerate
Plane shapesSides, angles, and vertices; sorting shapesLow

The two hardest chapters are linked, and both rest on the same thing: place value. A child not yet secure that the 3 in 324 means three hundred will stall on carrying, on borrowing, and later on long multiplication.
