Ordinal numbers show the place or position something holds within a series: first, second, third, fourth... They are different from cardinal numbers (1, 2, 3), which are used to count amounts. An ordinal answers the question “in what place?” while a cardinal answers “how many?”
In English, ordinals are usually written with a suffix attached to the digit (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th) or spelled out as a word (first, second, third). Most ordinals are formed by adding “-th” to the cardinal (four becomes fourth), but a few are irregular: one becomes first, two becomes second, three becomes third, five becomes fifth.

What are ordinal numbers?
An ordinal number marks the order or position of an item inside an ordered group. Kids use them constantly: the first day of school, the second row in the classroom, third place in a race. Learning them helps children organize information, follow step-by-step instructions (“first wash the dishes, second dry them”) and understand the order of events in time.
