Online summer camps for kids are worth choosing when your child wants a technical subject and you cannot drive to a center every day. In-person camps win for sports, art and meeting other children. In Mexico, school ends on July 9, 2027, while Chile, Argentina, Peru and Colombia break for summer between late November and December 2026. A 2-week in-person course in Mexico City cost MXN 2,500 in 2026, about MXN 45 per hour.

When summer break starts in each country

Summer 2027 is not the same season everywhere in Latin America. In Mexico it is the July and August break. In the southern cone and the Andes, classes end between November and December 2026 and the break runs into February or March. A January camp suits a family in Santiago but not one in Guadalajara.

Online or in person: what actually differs

An in-person camp wins on friendship and hands-on activities. An online one wins on time, flexibility and range of subjects. Neither is better overall: it depends on your routine.

A practical rule: learn physical things in person (swimming, dance, theater) and things that happen on a screen online, with a teacher and a small group. If your child tires after three hours of group activity, a short online class suits them better than a full-day camp.

What summer courses cost and how to compare prices

The total price of a summer course says little. The price per hour is the useful number. In 2026, two in-person courses in Mexico City show why:

Source: Chilango, with hours calculated by us from the published schedules. These are two examples, not a market average. For Chile, Argentina, Peru and Colombia we found no public prices that compare fairly, so ask for a written quote.

An example with made-up numbers: a camp at MXN 4,000 for 60 hours costs MXN 67 per hour, and an online course at MXN 2,000 for 12 classes of 60 minutes costs MXN 167 per hour. The second looks pricier, but you skip transport and meals away from home, and the group is smaller.

To compare any offer, follow these 4 steps:

Ask how many hours of real activity it includes, without lunch or recess.
Divide the total price by those hours. That is your price per hour.
Add what is not listed: materials, uniform, food and transport.
Compare with an online option for the same number of hours.

Free options exist too. In 2026, the Utopías programs in Mexico City were free for children aged 6 to 13, from July 28 to August 14, according to N+. For coding, Scratch is a free tool from the Scratch Foundation. What free options lack is a teacher who gives feedback and a group at a similar level.

Which course fits which age

Age sets how long your child can concentrate. This is a practical guide, not an official standard:

Ages 5 to 7: guided play, art or sport, 2 to 4 hours in person; online classes of 45 minutes.
Ages 8 to 12: projects with a visible result, such as a Scratch game or a digital drawing; online classes of 60 minutes.
Ages 13 to 17: skill courses with a practical outcome, such as coding or design with a portfolio; classes of 90 minutes.

For summer courses for teenagers, look at what they will produce at the end: an app, a portfolio or a team project. A concrete result gives them a reason to show up every day.

Checklist before you enroll your child

Before paying, go through these 7 points and ask in writing for any without an answer.

Exact dates and hours, checked against your school calendar.
Minimum and maximum age, and how many children per group.
What your child takes home: a project, a certificate or nothing.
Who teaches and what experience they have with children of that age.
Refund if your child gets sick or bored in the first week.
Whether there is a trial class, how long it is and whether it is free.
What the price includes and what you pay extra.

A trial class is the best filter: in 60 minutes you see whether your child gets hooked and whether the format fits.

A 6-week summer that mixes both formats

You do not have to pick a single format. Mixing them spreads the load. An illustrative plan for Mexico, with break starting July 10, 2027:

An online coding or design course fits when your child wants something technical and you cannot take them to a center every day. It starts on Saturday, July 10, 2027, because the last day of classes for basic education is Friday, July 9, according to the SEP calendar for the 2026-2027 school year. That calendar applies to public schools and to the private schools that follow it. Some private schools close a few days earlier or later, and teacher-training schools end on July 13. Check your child's school notice before paying for a course that starts in the first week. We did not find the 2027-2028 return date published when we wrote this, so do not book a course that ends in the last week of August without confirming it. For reference, the current school year began on August 31, 2026, so summer 2027 lasts about seven weeks if the return falls on similar dates.

When is summer break in Chile, Argentina, Peru and Colombia?

Classes end between late November and late December 2026, and summer break runs into January, February or March 2027. In Chile, the last day is December 4 for full-day schools and December 18 for the rest. In Argentina, CABA, Córdoba and Santa Fe close on December 18; Buenos Aires and Mendoza on December 22. Peru ends on December 18. In Colombia, public schools on calendar A close on November 29 in Bogotá, December 6 in Medellín and December 7 in Cali. The 2027 start dates are not yet published in any of the four countries, and private schools may use other dates, especially bilingual schools and those with a different calendar. Confirm the dates with your child's school before you pay.

Private camps with sports or languages can charge more, and several public programs are free. To compare fairly, divide the total price by real activity hours and add materials, food and transport. In Chile, Argentina, Peru and Colombia we found no comparable public prices, so ask for a written quote and compare by price per hour, not by the total. A camp that looks cheap for 3 weeks may include only 2 hours a day.

Is an online or an in-person summer camp better?

Neither beats the other overall: in person suits physical activity and friendships, while online suits technical subjects, flexible hours and no commute. An in-person camp usually requires blocks of 4 to 6 hours and a daily trip, which not every family can sustain. An online class takes 45 to 90 minutes and opens subjects your city may not offer, such as coding or design. Friendships change too: they are broader in person and smaller online, in live small groups. Many families mix both, for example 2 in-person weeks and several weeks with one online class. Try a trial class before committing, and watch how your child finishes the first week: if they show up eager on day three, the format works. If they dread it by day three, change the schedule or the format.

How far ahead should I enroll my child in a summer course?

Enroll 6 to 10 weeks ahead, because the most popular courses fill up before school break begins. In 2026, Cenart opened registration on June 8 for a course starting July 20, with 120 places and registration until full. If you follow that pattern in Mexico, search for summer 2027 between April and June. In the southern cone, where break starts in December, begin in September or October. An online course usually has more places, but the most comfortable slots, such as weekday afternoons, fill up first. If your child has a fixed swimming or language schedule, reserve those slots before choosing, and keep one free week for rest or a family trip. Registration usually asks for documents such as a birth certificate, so prepare them early.

What age can a child start an online summer course?

From age 6, as long as the class is short, live and in a small group where the teacher can see what each child does. At 6 or 7, keep each session to 45 minutes and stay nearby at the start. From 8 or 9, most children follow a 60-minute class with good independence, and 90-minute classes are common for teenagers. A trial week with short hours says more than any brochure, so start light and add days if your child asks for more.
