Combined Operations: What They Are and How to Solve Them (with Examples)

Combined operations are math expressions that mix several operations — addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, exponents and parentheses — and they are solved following a fixed order, not simply from left to right. They are taught around 4th to 6th grade, between ages 9 and 12, and they are the foundation for solving equations later on.

What are combined operations?

A combined operation is any math exercise that puts two or more operations together in a single expression, like 3 + 2 × 4. If a child solves this left to right, they get 20, but the correct answer is 11, because multiplication is solved before addition.
