To know whether coding suits your child, watch their everyday behaviour rather than their maths marks. A child who asks "but why does that happen", takes toys apart, or stays 20 minutes building something until it works already shows the raw material coding uses. The eight signs below can be checked at home with children aged 5 to 17.

Why maths marks are not a useful signal
Marks measure the final answer; coding demands a way of working: try, fail, fix, try again.
In a maths test, being wrong lowers the grade. In coding, being wrong is a normal part of the process. A program that fails five times and then runs does not indicate a weak child but a child working like a programmer.
That is why many children with average marks do very well in coding classes, while some used to always being right get frustrated quickly when the first red error appears.
