Year 5 Primary Maths Topics: A Complete Chapter Guide

Year 5 primary maths covers six broad areas: operations on fractions with unlike denominators, decimals and percentages, ratio and scale, speed and flow rate, the volume of solids, and data handling.

If Year 4 is where a child first meets abstract ideas, Year 5 is where those ideas get combined. Almost no chapter stands alone - nearly all of them rest on fractions. A child whose fractions were shaky in Year 4 will feel the consequences in almost every Year 5 chapter.

Year 5 Maths Topics, Chapter by Chapter

ChapterWhat is coveredDifficulty
Fraction operationsAdding and subtracting with unlike denominators, multiplying and dividing fractionsHigh
Decimals and percentagesConverting between fractions, decimals, and percentages, and calculating with themHigh
Ratio and scaleComparing two quantities, scale on maps and plansModerate
Speed and flow rateThe relationship of distance, time, and speed; volume, time, and flow rateHigh
Solid shapesVolume of cubes and cuboids, nets of solidsModerate
Data handlingPresenting data in bar, line, and pie chartsLow

The three chapters marked high share a single root: all of them require a child to be comfortable with fractions and ratio. This is why fixing one thing often fixes three chapters at once.
