What's the difference between a game developer and a game designer?

A game designer designs the rules, levels, and play experience; a game developer writes the code that makes that design actually run. In practice, especially for small or individual projects, one person often does both roles — exactly what kids learn on this path through Roblox Studio (design + Lua scripting). In large game studios, these two roles are usually split across different teams.

Can my child go straight to Roblox Studio without Scratch?

Yes, especially for kids aged 10+ who already have a logic foundation from another source (math, board games, or another coding platform). However, kids who start directly with Roblox Studio without a visual-coding foundation usually need extra time upfront to grasp event and variable concepts that feel natural in Scratch's colored blocks. Our teachers assess this in the free trial class before recommending a starting point.

How long does this path usually take?

On average 2-3 years to work through all three courses fully, depending on starting age and learning intensity. A child who starts Scratch at age 8 is usually ready for Roblox Studio within 6-12 months, then Python over the following 1-2 years. Kids who start older (12+) with a strong logic foundation can move through these stages faster. There's no deadline — every child progresses at their own pace.

Game Developer Path for Kids — FAQ

What age can a child start learning to become a game developer?

Kids can start as early as age 5-6 with Scratch Jr, long before touching real scripting. At this age, kids learn basic logic through visual blocks while building simple animations and games. Real scripting skills (Roblox Studio, Python) usually come in around age 8-9 once the logic foundation is set. There's no upper limit — teens aged 15-17 can still start this path from the beginning.

Does my child need to start with Scratch first?

Strongly recommended, but not strictly required for older kids. Scratch builds basic logic (loops, conditions, variables) in an easy-to-grasp visual form before a child moves into text-based scripting in Roblox Studio or Python. Kids aged 10+ with a strong logic foundation (from math, for example) can sometimes start directly with Roblox Studio. A free trial class will determine the right starting point for your child.
