Future careers in the AI era are changing shape far more than they are disappearing, and that changes how parents should prepare a child. What lasts is not a particular job but the 5 skills that keep a child useful whichever way the technology moves. Below are all five, which jobs change most, and concrete steps for ages 7 to 17.

Five skills that last

The durable skills are the ones that cannot be handed over wholesale to a machine. All of them can be practised from primary school.

The second row is the least taught and the fastest to become a differentiator. A child used to checking answers is better prepared than a child who memorised one app.

Jobs that change rather than vanish

The routine part gets taken first; the part needing judgement stays. That is the same pattern across almost every field.

What to do at each age

Do not pick a profession for a seven year old. Pick the habits.

The fourth row is the one families skip most often. A portfolio with three finished projects is more useful to a teenager than certificates from ten courses that produced nothing.

What not to worry about

The most common worries are usually not the actual risk.

"Coding becomes pointless because AI can write code". Someone still has to read, judge and fix the output, and that requires understanding the code
"My child has to choose a specialism now". What gets built at this age is habits, not a specialism
"All the jobs will disappear". The routine parts go; the parts requiring judgement become more valuable
"They must learn the newest AI tool immediately". The tools change every year, the checking habit does not

What actually deserves attention is simpler: has your child ever finished something on their own and can they explain how it works. That predicts far more than a list of tools they recognise.

The Indonesian context

Domestic demand for digital skills is growing in two directions at once, and both end at the same abilities. Local companies need people who can build and judge the result, not just one of the two.

Software and data roles: the widest job base, now assuming familiarity with AI
Design and content roles: AI tools are part of the workflow rather than a replacement for judgement
Roles needing both: front-end developers, game developers, analysts, automation

Build one small game, then have a friend play it and name one thing that was unclear
Train one simple model, then explain why it gets confused on a particular example

All three force the child to build, judge and explain in a single cycle. That is far more useful than memorising AI terminology that will change in two years.

Signs your child is on the right track

Not grades, but behaviour when nobody is telling them to.

They finish something properly without being asked twice
They ask why something worked, not just how to repeat it
They modify an example instead of copying it wholesale
They can explain their project to someone else in five minutes
They are suspicious of an answer that is too smooth

Two out of five is already a good sign. All five rarely appear together before the teenage years, and that is normal.

Steps for this month

Week 1: have your child finish any small project properly, all the way to done
Week 2: have them explain that project to a family member in five minutes
Week 3: break one part of the project together, then have them repair it
Week 4: take one trial class and see whether they ask to come back

Week three gives you the most information. A child who can repair something broken already has the skill that is hardest to automate, whatever profession they eventually choose.

The better question is not which professions last, but which part of a job lasts. The pattern is consistent across almost every field: the routine part gets automated first, while the part requiring judgement becomes more valuable. Does my child need to choose a specialism early?

No, and that is one of the most commonly misdirected worries. What gets built during primary and lower secondary years is habits, not a specialism. A nine year old who finishes one small project every week is building something useful in any field. Narrowing too early often ends in boredom, because children's interests genuinely change several times. A portfolio and the habit of finishing work are worth far more than a track chosen before the child knows what the options are.

Will all jobs disappear because of AI?

Most change shape rather than disappear. The structured, repetitive parts are automated fastest: data cleaning, standard reports, draft copy, image variations. The parts that require deciding what is true, choosing a direction and explaining it to others become more valuable, because their volume increases. The pattern is already visible in software, design, data and marketing at the same time. For parents the practical conclusion is simple: prepare the child for the right-hand column, judging and deciding, rather than the left.

From what age can a child start preparing?
