Coding and AI in the Indonesian Curriculum: A Parent's Guide

Koding dan Kecerdasan Artifisial (KKA — Coding and Artificial Intelligence) is now officially part of the Indonesian school curriculum. The news has left many parents asking the same thing: is my child required to take it, and do they need extra classes outside school?
The short answer: KKA is an elective subject, not a compulsory one — and that is exactly what makes the situation confusing. This article summarises what the official regulation actually says, and then what it means for your child.
What KKA Is According to the Official Rules
According to the official Kemendikdasmen site (kodingka.kemendikdasmen.go.id), Koding dan KA learning is designed to develop "computational thinking, data analysis, programming algorithms, and an understanding of AI ethics".
Its status: an elective subject. Schools may even choose one of three ways to implement it — as a standalone elective subject, integrated into an existing subject, or run as an extracurricular activity.
Levels and teaching hours

Note one important point: KKA only begins in Year 5 of SD. For children in Years 1–4, this material is not present at school at all.
The material is tiered
The approach is graded, and this is often misunderstood:
- SD — computational thinking through unplugged methods, that is, without a computer. Children learn to arrange sequences of steps and recognise patterns, not to write code.
- SMP — block-based programming (such as Scratch).
- SMA/SMK — text-based coding and applied AI.
So if you are picturing a Year 5 child coming home able to build an app, that expectation needs adjusting.

Three Things Parents Need to Understand
1. "Elective" means your child's school may not teach it
This is the most practical consequence of its status. Because it is not a compulsory subject, implementation depends on each school's readiness — whether there is a teacher able to teach it, whether there is equipment, whether there are hours available.
The most useful first step is not enrolling your child in a course. The first step is to ask the school: is KKA being run, in what form (a subject, integrated, or extracurricular), and from which year group.

2. Two hours a week is not much
Even if the school runs it in full, 2 hours a week is an introduction — not mastery. It is enough to give a child an understanding of what an algorithm is; it is not enough to make them able to build something themselves.
This is not a criticism of the curriculum. All introductory subjects work this way. But it matters that you judge it correctly: if your child is genuinely interested, school will not be the place where they go far.
3. What is assessed is not "can code" but a way of thinking
Computational thinking — breaking a big problem into small steps, recognising patterns, arranging sequences — is the core of this material, and it applies away from the computer too. A child used to thinking that way will find mathematics easier as well.
For that reason, if your child is struggling in mathematics, forcing coding first rarely helps. Both stand on the same foundation, and mathematics is the more fundamental one.
Does a Child Need to Learn This Outside School?
The honest answer: it depends, and not always yes.
No need to rush if: your child is below Year 4, or has not shown an interest of their own, or is struggling with core subjects such as mathematics. Foundations first.
It makes sense if: your child is already interested and bored with the pace at school, or their school is not running KKA at all, or they are already at SMP–SMA level and want to take it further.
What is worth avoiding is enrolling your child simply because of the news that "coding is in the curriculum". A new curriculum is not a reason to buy something — your child's interest and their school's readiness are the real reasons.
