Private tutor cost in Indonesia for a primary school child (SD, grades 1-6) runs from Rp 50,000 to Rp 210,000 per session in October 2026, depending on the tutor, the city, and the lesson length. A child with two sessions a week pays roughly Rp 400,000 to Rp 1.7 million a month. Below: a rate table, a monthly formula, and a comparison with tuition centres and small-group online classes.
Indonesian private tutor rates for primary school fall into three tiers: freelance tutors at Rp 50,000 to Rp 100,000 per session, standard packages at Rp 125,000 to Rp 130,000, and branded services up to Rp 210,000.
I collected the figures below from three public sources in October 2026. No single official price list covers all providers, so read them as ranges, not quotes. Parents in Indonesia call this "les privat", and searching for "harga les privat SD" in Indonesian returns the same pages.
| Type of private tutoring | Rate per session | Source and note |
|---|---|---|
| Freelance tutor or university student | Rp 50,000 - Rp 100,000 | Tutor listings on the Guru Inovatif platform, October 2026. Small sample, lesson length often missing |
| Standard national-curriculum package, grades 1-3 | about Rp 125,000 | Cermati article, March 2025 |
| Standard national-curriculum package, grades 4-6 | about Rp 130,000 | Cermati article, March 2025 |
| Bilingual or international-curriculum package | Rp 155,000 - Rp 160,000 | Cermati article, March 2025 |
| Branded home-tutor service | Rp 165,000 - Rp 210,000 | Bank Mega Syariah article, 2026, on Ruangguru Privat |
To get a price per hour, divide the session rate by the length. Ruangguru Privat packages run 90 minutes according to its own site, so Rp 165,000 to Rp 210,000 per session works out to about Rp 110,000 to Rp 140,000 per hour. Freelancers' session lengths vary, so ask how long a session lasts before you compare.
The Cermati and Bank Mega Syariah numbers are general ranges, not offers. Get a written quote from two or three providers.
Tutor type and city move the price more than the school subject does.
Cermati lists rates by school level and curriculum type, not by subject. So math, reading and writing, and science for primary school usually share one price at the same provider. What shifts the number:
Example (illustrative numbers): a grade 3 child in Bekasi with a freelance tutor at about Rp 80,000 a session. The same material with a branded provider in South Jakarta can come to Rp 170,000.

Monthly cost equals the session rate times sessions per week times 4.
The formula: rate per session x sessions per week x 4 weeks. The table uses three rates from above: Rp 75,000 (freelance, mid-range), Rp 130,000 (standard package), and Rp 190,000 (branded, mid-range). The last column uses the Algonova group class rate, from Rp 102,000 per session.
| Sessions per week | Freelance Rp 75,000 | Standard Rp 130,000 | Branded Rp 190,000 | Algonova group Rp 102,000 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Rp 300,000 | Rp 520,000 | Rp 760,000 | Rp 408,000 |
| 2 | Rp 600,000 | Rp 1,040,000 | Rp 1,520,000 | Rp 816,000 |
| 3 | Rp 900,000 | Rp 1,560,000 | Rp 2,280,000 | Rp 1,224,000 |
Worked example: a grade 3 child, two sessions a week, standard package at Rp 130,000. Rp 130,000 x 2 x 4 = Rp 1,040,000 a month. Over a 10-month school year that is Rp 10,400,000.
Add the costs that rarely appear on a price list: the tutor's transport, a sign-up fee, workbooks, and make-up sessions when the tutor cancels. Ask about all of them before paying.
The rate per session is only half the story. Work out the monthly bill, then check how far your child actually catches up.

A private tutor costs the most per hour and is the most flexible, a large tuition centre is cheaper per child, and an online group class sits in between.
For the general question of which format fits a child, see our guide to private tutor or tuition centre. Here the comparison covers cost only.
| Format | Class | What you can expect to pay | Upside | Downside |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private home tutor | 1 child, tutor visits | Rp 50,000 - Rp 210,000 per session | Flexible schedule, full attention | Highest cost per hour, quality rests on one person |
| Large tuition centre (bimbel) | Many children per class | Monthly package, differs by branch | Cheaper per child, a fixed learning rhythm | Little attention per child, fixed timetable |
| Online tuition subscription | Platform plus live classes | From about Rp 90,000 a month (CoLearn, as of August 2026, check current price) | Cheapest, no travel | Child needs self-discipline |
| Small-group online class (Algonova) | Up to 10 children, live tutor | From Rp 102,000 per session | No travel, progress report every 4 weeks | Not 1-on-1 in the group format |
Tuition centre prices are left out on purpose: Primagama, Ganesha Operation, and Neutron set prices by branch, and no public 2026 source could be checked. Ask your nearest branch for a price sheet.
Algonova also runs Private (1 child) and Mini (2 to 4 children) formats for kids who need more attention, alongside its online math classes for primary school. Prices are explained after the trial class. For math in particular, read private math tutoring for kids and online math lesson costs.
You can test a tutor in one or two trial sessions: watch whether the child dares to ask questions and whether the tutor explains without rushing.
Seven checks before paying for a package:
More detail on choosing a tutor is in how to choose an online math tutor.

A cheap trial session tells you more than a big package you have not tested.

Private tutoring gets cheaper fastest through three habits: cut sessions you do not need, hire for one subject at a time, and match the format to the child.
Four moves that make sense:
The calculation above covers one subject. If you are also weighing coding, coding class prices per city are a useful comparison.
A private tutor is worth it when the child has a clear, measurable problem: a chapter missed, a fear of math, or a school exam coming.
If a child simply avoids homework, an expensive tutor is not the answer. Start with study habits at home, and read when children should start math tutoring first. For one weak topic, 4 to 8 sessions may be enough. For several missed chapters, plan 3 to 6 months with written targets.
A child who is already fluent and wants another skill can try coding classes for primary school kids alongside school. Compare online math tuition too before you decide.
A primary school child with a private tutor twice a week pays roughly Rp 600,000 to Rp 1.5 million a month in October 2026, depending on the tutor and the city. That figure is the session rate times 8 sessions a month. A freelance tutor at Rp 75,000 gives Rp 600,000. A standard package at Rp 130,000 gives Rp 1,040,000, and a branded service at Rp 190,000 gives Rp 1,520,000. If one session a week is enough, halve the numbers. In Greater Jakarta, add 20 to 30 percent, as noted by Bank Mega Syariah. Online group classes usually cost less: from Rp 102,000 per session at Algonova, or about Rp 816,000 for two sessions a week. Over a 10-month school year, the gap between a freelancer and a branded service can top Rp 9 million at two sessions a week. Always ask for an itemised list of extra costs before agreeing to a package.
Usually yes, because a home tutor adds travel cost to the rate, while online lessons carry no such cost. Branded services quote Rp 165,000 to Rp 210,000 per session for a home visit (Bank Mega Syariah, 2026). Algonova online group classes start at Rp 102,000 per session, but the comparison is not like for like: a group has up to 10 children, while a home tutor is one-on-one. If your child needs full attention, ask about the Private or Mini online formats, with 1 to 4 children per class. Their prices are given after the trial class. Compare the total monthly bill, not only the session rate, and count the travel time of both child and tutor too, since a home visit can eat the afternoon your child needs for rest before the next lesson.
One or two sessions a week are enough for most primary school children, at 60 to 90 minutes each. Start with one session a week for four weeks. Then watch two things: whether your child understands homework better, and whether they ask more questions in class. If nothing has changed, move to two sessions. Three a week only makes sense for exam preparation or a chapter that is far behind. Sessions longer than 90 minutes are usually too long for this age, since a primary school child's focus is limited, so build in short breaks. Each extra session raises the bill in a straight line, so use the calculator above before adding more. Set a written target to check every month with the tutor, such as multiplication up to 10 without help, or a chapter test moving from 60 to 75.
Not always. Upper primary grades usually cost a little more because the material is heavier, but the gap is small. According to Cermati (March 2025), a standard package for grades 1-3 runs about Rp 125,000 per session and grades 4-6 about Rp 130,000, a difference of Rp 5,000. The bilingual package rises from Rp 155,000 to Rp 160,000. With a gap that small, the type of tutor and the city decide the bill far more than the grade. A grade 6 child with a freelance tutor can cost less than a grade 1 child at a branded service. Freelancers often use one rate for all primary grades, so ask directly and do not assume rates rise with each grade. Near grade 6, also ask whether extra pre-exam sessions are billed separately.
No tidy public data separates the two. University student and freelance tutors are usually cheapest, from about Rp 50,000 per session. Tutor listings on the Guru Inovatif platform show Rp 50,000 to Rp 100,000 per session for primary school in October 2026. It is a small sample, and some listings do not state the lesson length, so do not treat it as a single benchmark. Experienced teachers and education graduates charge more, but there is no official range to quote. Do not judge by rate alone. Ask for a trial session, ask about experience with primary school children, and see whether your child follows the explanation. A patient student often suits a child better than an expensive but rushed teacher. A child who is far behind may need someone used to rebuilding the basics, and that is worth paying more for.
The most common extras are the tutor's transport, a sign-up fee, workbooks or modules, and make-up sessions. Many parents compare only the session rate, yet the final bill rises with extras. No public data shows how much, so work it out from written quotes. Ask five questions: is transport included, is there a sign-up fee, who buys the workbooks, what happens when a session is cancelled, and is there a package discount. A simple case: two providers both charge Rp 130,000, but one bills transport per visit. Over 8 sessions a month, the difference shows. Put every figure in one table so the comparison is fair and no cost slips through, and use that table when you negotiate a package, since you will know which line items can be reduced.
Yes, because online lessons need no transport and often use group or mini-group formats that split the tutor's rate. Online tuition subscriptions start around Rp 90,000 a month (CoLearn, as of August 2026; prices change, so check the site), though they look more like general classes. Live classes with a tutor at Algonova start at Rp 102,000 per session, with groups of up to 10 children and a progress report every 4 weeks. Choose by temperament: a child who focuses easily does well in a group, while a shy child or one far behind fits the smaller Private or Mini formats better. Before deciding, work out the monthly bill for the number of sessions your child truly needs, not the session rate alone, and compare it with how reliably you can keep the schedule, because a lesson that is often cancelled costs more than a steady one at a higher rate.
The safest way is to ask for a trial session and pay for a package only after you and your child feel sure. At Algonova the trial class is a math diagnostic of about 60 minutes, free and with no credit card. The result shows which topics your child has mastered and which are behind, so you know how many sessions a week make sense. With other providers, ask whether a cheap trial session exists, whether the tutor can be swapped if your child does not click, and what happens to unused sessions if your child stops. Avoid paying for a 12-session package up front without trying first, especially when the money cannot be refunded. One trial session is usually enough to see whether your child dares to ask questions and the tutor explains patiently.
