Year 4 Mathematics Syllabus (KSSR): Topics & How to Help

The Year 4 KSSR Mathematics syllabus has eight topics: Whole Numbers and Basic Operations, Fractions Decimals and Percentage, Money, Time and Duration, Measurement, Space, Coordinates Ratio and Proportion, and Data Handling. This order comes directly from the Ministry of Education's Year 4 Mathematics DSKP, and school textbooks follow it chapter by chapter.

What's useful for parents isn't the topic names, but what a child actually needs to be able to do in each one. That's listed below.

Eight Topics and What a Child Should Be Able to Do

1. Whole Numbers and Basic Operations. The number range rises to 100,000. A child reads and writes numbers up to 100,000, states place value and digit value, rounds, compares two numbers, and orders numbers ascending or descending. After that, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division within the same range, including combined operations.

2. Fractions, Decimals and Percentage. Three ways of writing the same number. A child works with fractions and decimals, then starts using percentage in everyday situations like discounts and portions of a group.

3. Money. Values up to RM100,000. Includes adding up to three money values, subtracting, multiplying and dividing money values, and daily, weekly and monthly budgeting.

4. Time and Duration. The relationship between the 12-hour and 24-hour systems. Durations in hours and minutes within 24 hours, and unit conversion from hours to days, days to weeks, months to years, up to decades and centuries.

5. Measurement. Length in millimetres, centimetres, metres and kilometres, with unit conversion between millimetres and centimetres and between metres and kilometres. Mass in grams and kilograms. Liquid volume in millilitres and litres.

6. Space. Right angles, acute angles and reflex angles. Parallel and perpendicular lines. Perimeter of polygons up to eight sides. Area using uniform squares and using formulas.

7. Coordinates, Ratio and Proportion. Coordinates in the first quadrant, with x-axis, y-axis and origin. Ratios from 1:1 to 1:10, plus 1:100 and 1:1000. The unitary method for finding an unknown value.

8. Data Handling. Constructing and interpreting pictographs and bar charts.
