Year 8 Secondary Maths Topics: A Complete Chapter Guide

Year 8 secondary maths covers ten broad areas: number patterns, Cartesian coordinates, relations and functions, straight-line equations, simultaneous equations, Pythagoras' theorem, circles, flat-faced solids, statistics, and probability.

Where Year 7 introduces algebra, Year 8 uses it for almost everything. It is the year with the most chapters in secondary school, and the theme uniting them is the relationship between algebra and pictures: an equation that can be drawn as a line, and a line that can be written as an equation.

A child who catches that relationship finds Year 8 coherent. A child who treats each chapter as a separate pile of formulas is overwhelmed by their number.
