Year 12 Upper Secondary Maths Topics: A Complete Chapter Guide

Year 12 upper secondary maths covers four broad areas: integrals, three-dimensional geometry, advanced statistics, and probability - plus a revision of the entire upper secondary syllabus for university entrance.

Year 12 carries a double load no previous year has. The new material itself is actually the lightest of the three upper secondary years. But alongside it, students must revise three years of content for entrance exams while choosing a course and preparing applications.

Strategy therefore matters far more than hard work this year. Students who try to revise everything from the beginning almost always run out of time and energy before the exam.

Year 12 Maths Topics, Chapter by Chapter

ChapterWhat is coveredDifficulty
IntegralsIndefinite and definite integrals, area under a curveHigh
Three-dimensional geometryDistances and angles between points, lines, and planes in spaceHigh
Advanced statisticsData distribution, measures of spread, grouped dataModerate
Advanced probabilityConditional probability, independent and mutually exclusive eventsModerate
Upper secondary revisionAll Year 10 and 11 material for entrance examsModerate

The two chapters marked high have opposite natures. Integrals demand algebraic fluency and command of derivatives. Three-dimensional geometry demands spatial imagination - an entirely different skill, and students are often strong in only one of the two.
