Beasiswa Indonesia Maju (BIM): A Complete Guide for SMA Students and Parents

The Beasiswa Indonesia Maju (BIM) is a scholarship program from Indonesia's Ministry of Education for top-performing senior high school students who want to continue at universities at home or abroad. Launched in 2022, BIM covers preparation and full tuition for up to four years for Grade 11 and 12 students with national-level academic or non-academic achievements.

For students in Grade 11 or 12 in SMA, SMK or MA, BIM is one of the best opportunities to reach a dream university without the cost burden. This article gathers what you need to know: requirements, full benefits, application stages, and specific tips to raise the chance of passing. At the end we also explain how Grade 10 students can start preparing now.

What Beasiswa Indonesia Maju covers

BIM is an annual program from Indonesia's Ministry of Education (formerly Kemendikbud Ristek, now split into Kemendikdasmen and Kemendikti Saintek) for students who excel academically or non-academically. The program has two tracks:

  • Non-degree scholarship - preparation for an undergraduate degree abroad for Grade 11 students with at least national-level achievements.
  • Degree scholarship (Bachelor or Master) - direct funding for undergraduate or graduate studies, either inside Indonesia or abroad.

This article focuses on the senior high school path - because that is where preparation matters most. Many parents don't realise a child entering Grade 11 can already start completing the requirements this year.

Benefits and funding coverage

BIM finances two key stages: preparation and university.

Preparation stage includes:

  • SAT or ACT courses and exams
  • TOEFL or IELTS tests
  • University selection consulting
  • University application fees

University stage includes:

  • Full tuition fees
  • Books and study materials
  • Transport, visa, health insurance
  • Monthly living expenses

Funding can be full or partial depending on the family's financial situation. Maximum funding period is four years for undergraduate studies abroad. The degree track has similar benefits without the preparation phase.

What the selection committee looks for is not just grades. They look for students who show self-directed learning, adaptability to new environments, and meaningful contribution to their wider community.

Basic requirements for selection

The most common question from parents: does our child qualify. Here are eight main criteria for the SMA path:

  1. Indonesian citizen.
  2. Currently in Grade 11 at SMA, SMK, MA or equivalent.
  3. Good academic record plus a finalist or winner placement in a national or international competition in the past three years.
  4. Not currently receiving a similar scholarship from another institution.
  5. Able to use English or another foreign language relevant to the destination country.
  6. Written support from parents and school.
  7. Willing to complete the full preparation program.
  8. Physically and mentally healthy.

Students also need to prepare supporting documents: ID copies, academic transcripts, competition certificates, English certificates like TOEFL or IELTS if already available, and official statements.

💡 Parent tip: starting now, keep all competition certificates and achievement records in one digital folder. When applications open, collecting documents becomes five times faster.

Application stages and timeline

Registration happens online through the official portal. For applicants whose achievements are outside of Puspresnas or national talent platforms, there is one extra step: register achievements through the curation portal first.

Next stages:

  1. Online registration and document upload
  2. Administrative and achievement screening - verifying completeness and accomplishment weight
  3. Substantive selection and interview - English essays and interview sessions
  4. Final announcement and entry into the coaching phase

Based on last year's schedule, registration opens in October and the coaching phase starts in December. This year's timing will likely be similar - start preparing about two months ahead.

For the latest schedule, follow the official Instagram @beasiswaindonesiamaju. They typically announce open registration one or two months before the start date.

6 tips to pass the selection

The BIM selection committee receives thousands of applications every year. What distinguishes successful candidates from the rest is usually not GPA alone — it is strategic preparation. Six tips that come up repeatedly from alumni experience.

1. Study the selection process in detail. Open the official website and social media. Learn each requirement, step, and document. Look up previous recipients on social media - many gladly share their experience. Thorough understanding reduces surprises at critical stages.

2. Fill the form carefully — don't rush. The most frustrating case: a candidate failing because they typed the wrong birthdate or graduation year. Take quiet time to fill each field, then verify twice. Ask a parent or sibling to review the form before submitting.

3. Show your actual self, not the version you think they want. In essays and interviews, honesty beats strategy. Experienced interviewers immediately catch when someone is telling a story that isn't theirs. Show interests, strengths and experience genuinely rooted in your own life.

4. Practice interviews repeatedly. Build a list of likely questions - from alumni or online searches. Have a parent, older sibling or teacher act as interviewer. The goal is not to memorise answers, but to get used to thinking and speaking calmly under pressure. A student who has simulated five times feels much more confident in the real session.

5. Make digital backups of every document. Keep ID, family card, transcript, certificates, and recommendation letters on Google Drive or a similar cloud platform. Use clear file names: ID_StudentName_2026.pdf, Math_Olympiad_Certificate_2025.pdf. When the selection team requests something extra at short notice, you can send within minutes.

6. Consult with an expert or alumni. Some education consultancies offer specific scholarship application coaching. They understand selection patterns, essay-writing tips, and interview strategy from years of experience. A few hours of consulting often saves much more than the cost of failing the selection due to small preparation gaps.

Preparing from Grade 10 — what to do now

A question we often hear from parents of Grade 10 students: "Aren't we too early to think about BIM". The answer is no. Grade 10 is actually the golden window to build the achievement foundation that later becomes a core BIM requirement.

Build consistent academic performance - not just perfect scores in one subject, but balance across subjects. The committee looks at patterns, not peaks.

Enter two to three competitions per year in fields you genuinely care about. Not just many competitions, but ones that show depth of interest. National Science Olympiads, English debating, coding competitions, research projects - all produce certificates that later count as achievement proof.

Start strengthening English now. TOEFL or IELTS is not a test that can be prepared in two months from zero. Start small: watch English content with subtitles, read English news every morning, join online English discussions.

How to build a strong achievement portfolio

Science and technology competitions are one of the most reliable paths to building a portfolio the selection committee notices. National Science Olympiads, Madrasah Science Competitions, and regional coding contests all count as national-level achievements.

At Algonova we have taught over 1,000,000 students in more than 90 countries across 9 years, and many Indonesian alumni use their coding and math competition certificates from us to support their scholarship applications. Small classes (maximum 8 students) let each child be personally prepared for competition.

For middle and high school students interested in building a tech portfolio, our Teen Coding program offers Python, web development and AI tracks with a final project that can be published on GitHub. For younger kids we have a Primary School Coding program for early foundations — read our parent's guide on the blog.

To test whether our approach fits your child, sign up for a free Master Class - no commitment, no credit card. In one session our teacher assesses the child's level and gives an honest recommendation.

Summary

  1. Beasiswa Indonesia Maju funds preparation and full tuition for up to four years for top-performing SMA students.
  2. The core requirement is at least one national-level achievement in the past three years, plus written support from parents and school.
  3. Registration typically opens in October — prepare documents and practice interviews two months before.
  4. Show an authentic self in essays and interviews, not the version you think the committee wants to see.
  5. For Grade 10 students, starting to build a competition portfolio now is the best investment for passing BIM later.
