Kartu Indonesia Pintar (KIP): How to Register, Requirements, and Benefits

Kartu Indonesia Pintar (KIP), the Smart Indonesia Card, is a government marker card given to school-age children (usually 6-21 years) from low-income families, certifying that they are entitled to education assistance through the Program Indonesia Pintar (PIP). KIP is issued by the Ministry of Education to help children from disadvantaged families stay in school without cost barriers. This article explains what KIP is, who is eligible, how to get it, and how it differs from PIP.
What is KIP and how is it different from PIP?
Many parents treat them as the same, but they differ. PIP is the programme (the education cash assistance), while KIP is the card (the marker that a child is a target recipient). For higher education there is a separate programme called KIP Kuliah. This article focuses on KIP for school levels (SD to SMA/SMK).
Who is eligible for KIP?
The main target is students from poor or vulnerable families, especially those listed in the government social welfare data (DTKS). Priority also goes to children of Kartu Keluarga Sejahtera (KKS) holders, orphans, children with disabilities, or those affected by disasters. A child does not need academic achievement to qualify.
How do you get KIP?
There are generally two routes:
- Automatically through data — children from social-assistance families already recorded can become target recipients without applying.
- Through the school — if not yet recorded, parents can ask the school to propose the child, bringing documents such as the Family Card (Kartu Keluarga) and KKS if available.
Because mechanisms and requirements can change, the safest step is to ask the homeroom teacher or school operator and check official information at pip.kemdikbud.go.id.
Tips for parents
- Make sure your child's NISN and Family Card data are accurate at school — incorrect data is the most common reason assistance is not disbursed.
- Keep digital copies of all important documents.
- Do not trust anyone who promises KIP for a fee; the programme is free.
Support like KIP helps cover basic schooling costs, but many parents want to go further by equipping children with future skills. At Algonova we teach coding, maths, and AI for children aged 5-17 in small online classes. If you want your child to try, a free Master Class is available. You can also read our guide to the Program Indonesia Pintar (PIP) to understand the assistance in more detail.
Note: This guide is general and informational. Requirements, eligibility, schedules, and official amounts can change each year — always check the latest official sources. Algonova is an online coding and math school for children, not the organizer of this program.
