What Is Coding: Meaning, How It Works, and Examples for Beginners

Coding is the process of writing instructions (code) in a programming language so a computer can perform specific tasks. Put simply, coding is how humans "talk" to computers using commands the machine understands, from building apps and websites to games.
Algonova is an online course platform for coding, math, AI, and design for children aged 5-17, with 1,000,000+ alumni in 90+ countries since 2016. Classes are taught live by certified teachers in groups of up to 6 students — not recorded videos. Offline learning centers are also available in major Indonesian cities, including Jakarta.
The word "coding" means writing code: a set of commands arranged in a logical order. Without code, devices like phones, laptops, and ATMs would not know what to do.
What Is the Difference Between Coding and Programming?
Coding is the part of programming focused on writing code, while programming covers the broader process, including designing, testing, and maintaining a program.
Many people use the two terms interchangeably, and in everyday conversation that is fine. The difference lies only in scope: coding is narrower (typing commands), while programming spans the whole journey of building software. For beginners, this distinction is not worth worrying about — learning to code is the natural first step. Read more in what coding is for kids.
