What Is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is an artificial-intelligence chatbot, made by OpenAI, that understands questions written in everyday language and replies with human-like text. You type a question or request, and ChatGPT writes back an answer — explaining an idea, drafting a story, or helping fix a piece of code.

How ChatGPT Works

ChatGPT is a large language model: it was trained on huge amounts of text so it can predict the most likely next words and form sentences that make sense. When a child asks explain photosynthesis simply, it assembles an answer word by word from patterns it learned. A concrete fact: ChatGPT reached 100 million users within about two months of its 2022 launch, one of the fastest-growing apps in history. It is powerful but not perfect — it can sound confident yet still be wrong, so answers should always be checked.

Why It Matters for Kids

Tools like ChatGPT are becoming part of how children learn, so using them thoughtfully — as a helper, not a shortcut that replaces thinking — is an important new skill. ChatGPT is a real-world example of artificial intelligence built with machine learning. Understanding how it works, and its limits, is part of the digital literacy taught in an Algonova coding class.
