What Is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is an artificial-intelligence chatbot, made by OpenAI, that understands questions written in everyday language and replies with human-like text. You type a question or request, and ChatGPT writes back an answer — explaining an idea, drafting a story, or helping fix a piece of code.

How ChatGPT Works

ChatGPT is a large language model: it was trained on huge amounts of text so it can predict the most likely next words and form sentences that make sense. When a child asks explain photosynthesis simply, it assembles an answer word by word from patterns it learned. A concrete fact: ChatGPT reached 100 million users within about two months of its 2022 launch, one of the fastest-growing apps in history. It is powerful but not perfect — it can sound confident yet still be wrong, so answers should always be checked.

What Can ChatGPT Do

ChatGPT can answer questions, explain a school topic in simpler words, help brainstorm ideas for a story or project, translate between languages, and summarise a long passage. For young coders it can suggest why a piece of code is not working or explain what a line does. It can also get things wrong, so it works best as a study helper whose answers a child checks, rather than a source to copy without thinking.

Is ChatGPT Safe for Kids

ChatGPT can be safe for children when an adult is involved and a few rules are set. OpenAI asks users to be at least 13, and recommends parental permission for teens under 18. A few habits keep it safer: never share a full name, address, school, or photos; treat answers as a starting point to check, not the final truth; and keep an adult nearby for tricky topics. Used this way, it becomes a guided learning tool rather than an unsupervised one.

Why It Matters for Kids

Tools like ChatGPT are becoming part of how children learn, so using them thoughtfully — as a helper, not a shortcut that replaces thinking — is an important new skill. ChatGPT is a real-world example of artificial intelligence built with machine learning. Understanding how it works, and its limits, is part of the digital literacy taught in an Algonova coding class.
