What Is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is technology that lets computers do things that usually need human thinking — like recognising a face, understanding speech, or making a decision — by learning patterns from data. Instead of following only fixed instructions, an AI system improves as it sees more examples.

How AI Learns

Most modern AI learns by example. Show a program thousands of pictures labelled cat or dog, and it slowly learns the patterns that tell them apart — this is called machine learning. Kids already meet AI every day: it recommends videos on YouTube, powers voice assistants like Siri, and lets a phone camera find faces. A concrete fact: an AI that plays chess or Go can study millions of games and then beat the best human players, something no person could practise fast enough to do.

Types of AI

Today's AI comes in a few kinds. Narrow AI is built for one job, like recommending videos, filtering spam, or recognising a face, and it is the only type that really exists right now. General AI would think and learn across many different tasks the way a person does, but it is still an idea researchers are working toward. A third kind, generative AI, creates new text, images, or music from what it has learned, which is how tools like ChatGPT and image generators work.

Examples of AI in Everyday Life

Children use AI more than they realise. It recommends the next video on YouTube, powers voice helpers like Siri and Google Assistant, sorts photos by the faces in them, and translates messages between languages. Map apps use AI to predict traffic, game characters use it to react to players, and email uses it to catch spam. Each of these learned its skill from large amounts of data rather than from a fixed list of rules.

AI is quickly becoming part of school, work and play, so understanding it early helps children use it wisely rather than fear it.
