Algonova vs SIP Abacus in Malaysia: Which One Fits Your Child?
Nurul Izzati
Math Education Specialist at Algonova Malaysia

Algonova vs SIP Abacus is not a like for like choice: SIP Abacus trains mental arithmetic on a bead frame through a ladder of levels that runs for years, while Algonova teaches live online maths with a teacher from RM 48 a lesson. The comparison below is for Malaysian parents of children aged 5 to 12 who are deciding where the tuition budget goes.
Algonova is an online school for maths, coding, AI and design, with more than 1,000,000 students in 97 countries over more than 10 years and a parent rating of 4.9. Lessons are live with a teacher in small groups, not recorded video, and the first one is a free 60 minute trial.
What parents ask before choosing:
- What SIP Abacus teaches, and whether that is maths tuition
- Which ages each programme takes
- How long one class runs, and the whole programme
- What each costs in Malaysia
- Whether SIP Abacus still operates in Malaysia in 2026
- What to do when a child calculates fast but freezes on word problems
- Whether a family can run both
SIP Abacus trains arithmetic speed on a bead frame, Algonova teaches maths with a live teacher
SIP Abacus is an abacus and mental arithmetic programme. Children first work sums on a physical abacus, then learn to picture the beads and calculate without touching the tool. The company describes the payoff as concentration, memory and quick recall, and its own FAQ states plainly that it does not teach English or Science directly (sipabacus.co.nz/faq). The programme was founded in Malaysia in 1999 and launched in India in August 2003 (centres.sipabacus.com).
Algonova sells something different. The Malaysian online maths class works on number sense, reasoning and problem solving, taught live by a teacher who sees where a child is stuck and changes the explanation on the spot. The same account carries the child onward into coding, design and AI.
They are answering different complaints. Speed on a bead frame and understanding of a syllabus are separate skills, so start by working out which one is missing at home.
