The company describes the payoff as concentration, memory and quick recall, and its own FAQ states plainly that it does not teach English or Science directly (sipabacus.co.nz/faq). The programme was founded in Malaysia in 1999 and launched in India in August 2003 (centres.sipabacus.com).

Algonova sells something different. The Malaysian online maths class works on number sense, reasoning and problem solving, taught live by a teacher who sees where a child is stuck and changes the explanation on the spot. The same account carries the child onward into coding, design and AI.

They are answering different complaints. Speed on a bead frame and understanding of a syllabus are separate skills, so start by working out which one is missing at home.

SIP Abacus states its programme is best suited to children aged 5 to 12, and that applicants aged 12 to 14 go through a short interview before enrolment. The youngest band, Abacus Junior, is written for ages 5 to 7 (sipabacus.co.nz/faq).

Algonova's Malaysian maths class is built for ages 6 to 8, the years when place value, carrying and borrowing decide whether a child later enjoys maths or avoids it. The practical overlap is narrow. For a child in Darjah 1 or Darjah 2, both are open. For a 14 year old, only one still is.

Parents rarely tell me their child is slow at arithmetic. They tell me their child gets the sum right and still cannot start the question. Those are two different problems, and they need two different classes.

One SIP Abacus class runs 75 minutes, and the full ladder runs for years

SIP Abacus does not publish Malaysian class details, so the figures below come from its New Zealand edition and should be treated as an indication, not as a Malaysian offer. There, every class runs 75 minutes whether in person or online, families are quoted on two sessions a week, and the company caps a class at 12 children in person and 6 children online, with a batch starting as a group of 4 to 12 (sipabacus.co.nz/faq).

The commitment is the part parents underestimate. The published ladder runs Junior 1 to 4 at four months each, Foundation 1 at six months, Foundation 2, 3 and 4 at four months each, Advanced 1 to 4 at four months each, then Grand Modules A, B and C at six months each (sipabacus.co.nz/program-levels). A child starting at Foundation 1 needs about 18 months just to finish Foundation 4, and the whole ladder from Junior 1 to Grand Module C adds up to roughly 68 months on those published durations, which exclude holiday breaks. Mental calculation without the abacus begins only at Foundation 2, the level the company itself describes as the point where sums start to be solved without the tool.

Algonova has no ladder to buy into. Lessons run weekly with a live teacher, and a family picks the format: one to one, a mini group of 2 to 4, or a group of up to 10. Pricing is personalised, and the quote comes after the free trial lesson, once a teacher has seen the child's level. SIP Abacus does not publish Malaysian fees, Algonova starts at RM 48 a lesson

We found no published Malaysian price list for SIP Abacus anywhere in the open web, and no official Malaysian site exists to carry one. Fees appear to be set by whichever centre a family walks into, so you will learn the number only by asking.

For context from another country: the New Zealand edition publishes classes from NZ24 an hour, or NZ$21 an hour on annual prepayment, with fortnightly payment options and a sibling discount (sipabacus.co.nz/faq). Those are New Zealand prices, not Malaysian ones. No directory or centre page we checked publishes a Malaysian figure for this brand, so the number is the one the centre tells you, and it is worth asking how many sessions a month it covers.

SIP Abacus figures come from its own New Zealand and India material, listed in the sources at the end. Where the company publishes nothing for Malaysia, the table says so instead of guessing.

The programme began in Malaysia in 1999, yet we could not confirm an active Malaysian operation in 2026. Checked on 19 August 2026: sipabacus.com.my, sipacademy.com.my and sipabacus.my do not resolve, sipabacus.com/my returns a 404, and the brand's own country switcher links only to India, Sri Lanka, the UAE, the USA and New Zealand, with no Malaysia edition. Its global centre locator lists 115 centres, and every state in that list is Indian.

Facebook pages belonging to individual centres do exist. That proves neither that the brand has left nor that it has stayed; it means a Malaysian parent cannot verify timetables, class sizes or fees from any official source.

If your child calculates fast but freezes on word problems, speed is not the gap

Abacus training is genuinely good at what it claims. A child who finishes several levels really can add long columns mentally, and the concentration gains parents report are why the method has lasted decades.

It fits a different complaint poorly. When a child reads a KSSR word problem and cannot tell which operation to use, the bottleneck is comprehension, not arithmetic speed. Malaysia's national curriculum is built around applying maths to situations, as set out by the Ministry of Education Malaysia, and OECD PISA measures the same thing: whether a student can turn a described situation into maths.
