What Is STEM? A Guide for Parents and Its Benefits

STEM is an educational approach that integrates four disciplines — Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics — teaching them in a connected way instead of as separate subjects. Its goal is for children to solve real problems by combining knowledge from different areas, just as happens in life outside the classroom.

STEM = Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics

Each letter contributes a way of thinking: Science teaches observing and asking questions, Technology using and creating digital tools, Engineering designing and building solutions, and Mathematics measuring and reasoning with logic. In a typical STEM project, a 9-year-old can program a small robot: using math to calculate distances, code to give it commands, and engineering to adjust the design until it works. It is not about memorizing facts, but applying them. The term was coined by the U.S. National Science Foundation in the early 2000s. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in STEM occupations is projected to grow about 10% between 2023 and 2033, more than double the average for all other occupations.
