Five Steps to a First Digital Drawing

1. Download Ibis Paint X and open a new canvas

Install it free from the App Store or Google Play. Open a new canvas at a standard square size — easier to manage for a first try.

2. Sketch the outline with a simple brush

Pick the pencil or marker brush and sketch loosely. Nothing needs to be perfect — this layer is just a guide.

3. Add a new layer for line art

Tap the layers icon and add a new layer above the sketch. Trace clean lines over the rough sketch on this new layer, then hide or lower the opacity of the sketch layer underneath.

4. Add a color layer below the line art

Add another layer below the line art layer, and use the Fill (bucket) tool to add flat colors. Keeping colors on their own layer means mistakes are easy to undo without touching the line art.

5. Add shading and export

On a new layer set to "Multiply", add soft shadows with a soft airbrush. When happy with the result, tap the export icon to save it as an image or share it directly.

Mistakes That Often Frustrate Beginners

1. Adding too many layers too soon. More than 4-5 layers on a first drawing gets confusing fast. Keep it to sketch, line art, color, and shading.

2. Zooming in too much while drawing. Working zoomed in on one small area often means proportions look wrong when zoomed back out. Check the whole canvas often.

3. Comparing the result to professional art immediately. A first digital drawing won't look like a finished illustration — that's normal. The skill builds with each new piece.
