What Is Software? Definition, Types and Examples

Software is a set of coded instructions that tells a computer what to do. Unlike the physical parts you can touch, software is the programs, apps, and code that make a device useful — from the operating system that starts a phone to the game a child taps to play.

Types of Software

Software falls into two main groups. System software runs the machine itself: operating systems such as Windows, macOS, or Android manage memory, files, and the screen so everything else can work. Application software is what people open to get things done — a web browser, a drawing app, a maths game, or a messaging program. When a child opens Roblox or Minecraft, they are using application software, while the Android system running underneath is system software.

Software is also different from hardware. Hardware is the physical machine you can hold — the screen, keyboard, chips, and battery. Software is the invisible set of instructions stored on that hardware. A tablet with no software would be a blank slab; the software brings it to life. Today a single smartphone can run millions of different apps, every one of them built from lines of code.

Why It Matters for Kids

Understanding software helps children see that the games and apps they love are made by people writing instructions — and that they can build them too. Malaysian schools introduce computational thinking through the KSSR curriculum, and knowing how software works lays a foundation for STEM and future careers. Children in Algonova coding classes start by building their own simple programs, turning ideas into working software; you can also read what coding is for kids. A free trial lesson is a friendly first step.
