What Is Robotics? A Simple Guide and Its Benefits for Kids

Robotics is the branch of technology that designs, builds, and programs machines called robots to sense their surroundings and carry out tasks automatically. It combines three fields — coding, mechanics, and electronics — so a robot can move, react, and make simple decisions without a person controlling every step.

How Robotics Works: Coding + Mechanics + Electronics

A robot has three working parts. Mechanics is its body — the motors, wheels, arms, and frame that let it move. Electronics is its nervous system — sensors that detect light, distance, or touch, plus the wiring that carries signals. Coding is the brain: a program tells the robot what to do when a sensor picks something up. For example, a line-following robot uses a light sensor to "see" a black line, and its code says "if you drift off the line, turn back."
