What Is an Application (App): Definition, Types, and Examples

Bayu Nugraha

An application (app) is a computer program built to help a user complete one specific task, such as sending messages, playing games, editing photos, or learning. The word "application" comes from application software — software designed for the end user, as opposed to system software like Android or Windows that runs the device itself.
Types of Applications
Applications generally fall into three types based on where they run. Mobile apps run on phones or tablets, like WhatsApp, TikTok, or games on Android and iOS. Web apps open directly in a browser with no download needed, like Gmail or Google Docs. Desktop apps are installed on a computer, like Microsoft Word or Photoshop. A relatable example for a child: a favorite phone game is a mobile app, and every app is built with coding — lines of instructions that tell the device what to do. For scale, the Google Play Store alone offers more than 2 million apps ready to download.
Why It Matters for Kids
Every app a child uses each day was built by programmers using a programming language. When a child learns what coding is, they move from simply using apps to being able to build their own, while training logic and problem-solving skills useful across many fields. This turns a child from a mere user of technology into a creator of it. In the Algonova coding course, children build their first apps and games step by step.
